The University of Music Würzburg, founded in 1797 by Franz Joseph Fröhlich as the Collegium musicum academicum, holds the distinction of being one of Germany's oldest music education institutions. Originally named the Bavarian State Conservatory of Music from 1921 to 1973, it adopted its current name on September 1, 1973.
