The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is a public research university located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was originally founded in 1654 and re-established on January 1, 2003, through the merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the University of Essen. With campuses in both Duisburg and Essen, UDE is part of the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr. The university offers a broad spectrum of academic disciplines across its 11 faculties, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Educational Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and Medicine. UDE is recognized for its research in nanosciences, biomedical sciences, urban systems, and the transformation of contemporary societies. As of 2023, the university has approximately 40,639 students, making it one of the largest universities in Germany.
