The German Police University (DHPol) is a special higher learning institution with university status, supported by the interior ministries and interior senators of the federal and state governments. Incorporated into the North Rhine-Westphalian Higher Education Act on December 15, 2016, DHPol's status as a state university has been specified under higher education law. The university celebrated its 10th anniversary on March 1, 2016. DHPol offers an accredited two-year Master's program in 'Public Administration - Police Management,' designed for police officers from across Germany who are promoted to the higher police service upon successful completion. Starting in April 2024, the university will also offer a part-time two-year continuing education program titled 'Public Governance and Democratic Resilience,' aimed at specialists and managers from all authorities and organizations with security tasks, as well as municipal authorities. Additionally, DHPol provides a comprehensive training program for the higher police service, accommodating 2,000 participants from Germany and abroad annually. Research across all disciplines represented at DHPol constitutes the third pillar of the university's mission.
